Why Barrier Performance Matters
A film's barrier is one of the most important layers in flexible packaging that can determine the preservation, shelf life, and production cost of your product. Learn what material properties perform best for your product's packaging!
HOW IT WORKS
Barrier performance is determined by three main factors: material type, number of layers, and the layer thickness. It's all about finding the right balance!
HOW IT'S MEASURED
Barrier Performance can be measured in two ways, WVTR and OTR. The lower the WVTR and OTR of the film, the higher the barrier performance it has (film is less permeable).
Material Type
# of Layers
Layer Thickness
Water Vapor Transmission Rate (WVTR)
Measured in cc/m²/day
Oxygen Transmission Rate (OTR)
Measured in g/m²/day
STAY CRISP
Using a specialized barrier with a low OTR prevents your product from going stale and keeps it crisp for the customer to enjoy.
If your product is on the heavier side (ex: liquids, cement powder, ...), a barrier with high tensile strength can protect your packaging from tearing.
EXTRA STRENGTH
PRESERVED FRAGRANCE
When it comes to products like coffee or loose leaf tea, a foil barrier with low permeability will ensure that your product's unique scent is long-lasting.
Electronics such as microchips are especially sensitive and have the highest packaging needs. They require a barrier that has anti-static (ESD) technology and a low WVTR to prevent damage from static and moisture.
ELECTRONICS
DUAL-PURPOSE
